I know I promised pictures, but the camera was abandoned in the midst of our midnight flight from the campsite.
Nothing really went according to plan. Originally, we had our eye on a great little camping site just north of Kernville, but when I went to reserve it online they wanted an extra $20 in booking fees. In hindsight, totally would have been worth it. We ended up in a semi-shady, short-hike from the river site in the Lower Kern, which was considerably warmer than the nice, shady, sit-by-the-river spot we'd been eyeing in the Upper Kern. It wasn't a bad spot. It was just warm.
Too warm for Cadence. I'd imagined our nice cool spot, with the tent able to be a haven for Cadence to roll around in. However, our site had our tents pitched up a hill and a bit away from the main part of the site. So, it was either the playpen or being held. And as the heat wore on, Cadence got less flirtatious and happy to play with everyone and more fussy and wanting to be held by only me. She did well, at first, eating crackers, staring wide-eyed at the river, and sucking down some water-down ice cold juice her Dama had bought when I mentioned she'd been guzzling samples of the same stuff earlier (the organic juices at the Farmers Market, apple pomegranate. The girl likes pomegranate, lol)
After working with her for a few hours, we finally loaded her up in the car and took her into Lake Isabella for some air conditioning until the campsite cooled down. She was back to her happy self for awhile after that, except then she was tired, and she fought going to sleep. She is a breeze to put down at home, but it takes a little more work when we're elsewhere. However, even then, I think I have an easier time than many, so...
She ate baked potato, gummed graham crackers, got a tiny taste of marshmallow, loved fresh corn on the cob (cut off the cob). The pork James and I had bought and seasoned for the trip was left in the ice chest, but James did grill up the corn I'd bought (fresh from the Farmers Market, yummy!) and we feasted on cold fried chicken that his mom had brought up with her. After Cadence's nap marshmallows were roasted, but I think the heat had gotten to us all by then. I had only one s'more before trying to put Cadence to bed, and James's mom and sister weren't far behind me in following me up to the tents.
We'd brought up Cady's old bassinet. She'd fit well enough when we tried her out in it a few weeks ago, but apparently she's grown since then, so it was a tight fit. She loved that she could pop up over the edge and see me sitting there, though, which made putting her to sleep hard, but I finally did and then joined James at the campfire for the mandatory relaxing by the fire and looking up at the stars. My all time favorite part of camping.
Cadence woke up an hour later. Screaming right as 10pm (quiet time) came around. The ranger had assured us we wouldn't be in trouble for it, and many people were still talking around campfires, but I still felt bad. She finally settled fitfully for sleep right next to me. I didn't bother with the bassinet. We temporarily switched back to co-sleeping. She slept a little better, but at 11:30 she was awake again and nothing would soothe her. This time she wasn't fussing, she was full on screaming. Oops. After fighting with her for awhile, James and I accepted the inevitable, woke his mom to tell her (we'd already made iffy plans if this became the case), packed up our stuff as much as possible, grabbed Cady's blanket and formula, and came home.
Cadence slept beautifully. Except for a brief fuss fest at 6:30am (which I got up to make a bottle but in the time it took me to do that she'd settled back to sleep), she slept from midnight to 8:30.
So we've learned: 1) Pay the freaking booking fee, even if it is more expensive then the camping fee itself. 2) With reservations in advance, don't worry about showing up until the hottest part of the day is over. 3) Have Cadence used to sleeping other places and not needing routine to sleep well. 4) Never forget chapstick with sunscreen, especially when one is prone to
always sunburning one's lips (ow, poor me!)
